FAO Project Brief for Web Site – Empowering Communities to Demand Safe Food
Food-borne diseases and toxic exposures have become a major global public health concern, affecting nearly 1 in 10 people every year. Unsafe food leads to preventable illness, economic losses, and increased pressure on healthcare systems. Most of these illnesses stem from avoidable mistakes in food production, handling, storage, and hygiene.
To strengthen community demand for safer food in Sri Lanka, the Scaling Up Nutrition People’s Forum (SUN PF) Sri Lanka implemented the project “Empowering Communities to Demand Safe Food through Behaviour Change Communication,” funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) supported BESPA project.
With the support of health officers and community stakeholders, the project was successfully completed. It resulted in the establishment and trained of three Consumer Societies (CSs) at district level and the training of members from three Trade Associations (TAs) in each district—marking an important step forward in promoting safe food practices across the entire food chain.
The project applied a cascade training model to ensure wide and sustainable impact:
